The Alabama Historical Commission (AHC), seeks a full-time site director for Old Cahawba Archaeological Park near Orrville, AL. This position will be filled from the State of Alabama Personnel Department’s Cultural Resource Coordinator, Senior register (30423).
The AHC, the State Historic Preservation Office, was created on August 19, 1966, when Governor George Wallace signed Act Number 168 of the Special Session. The AHC works to accomplish our mission through two fields of endeavor: Preservation, interpretation, and promotion of state-owned historic sites as public attractions; and statewide programs to assist people, groups, towns, and cities with local preservation activities.
The site director will manage the day-to-day operations of Old Cahawba Archaeological Park, Alabama’s first state capital and now the state’s most famous ghost town and help further the agency’s mission to “protect, preserve, and interpret” Alabama’s historic places.
The individual chosen to fill this position will be energetic, highly motivated, and dedicated to helping tell the stories of Old Cahawba, including difficult history.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Overseeing daily operations, programs, site budget, finances, and personnel to achieve site goals
• Working closely with the AHC Historic Sites staff to develop programming in alignment with short and long-term goals, to promote visitation and historic preservation
• Overseeing construction and restoration projects
• Working closely with the Cahawba Advisory Committee and the Cahaba Foundation
• Leading a small but dedicated staff
• Collaborating with staff to foster programs that encourage deeper understanding of Old Cahawba and how that history connects to modern issues
• Communicating effectively and acting as the primary spokesperson for Old Cahawba, building relationships with area businesses, similar organizations, community groups, elected and public officials, and the community at large
Minimum Requirements:
Master’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in museum education, museum studies, public history, history, social sciences education, archaeology, heritage resources, folklore, or a closely related field.
Skills:
• Administrative experience, including monitoring budgets
• Strong planning, organizational, and communication skills
• Experience organizing and leading public programs and events
• Experience developing or assisting with the development of interpretive exhibits
• Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders
Salary Range: $49,267.20 – $82,627.20
