ARAS POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

The Arkansas Archeological Survey (ARAS) invites applications for a permanent, full-time position as Research Station Archeologist to begin on October 1, 2019, or a soon as possible thereafter. The position is based at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville (UAF) campus in Fayetteville, Arkansas (https://www.uark.edu).
Job Description: This is a full-time, 12-month appointment. The station archeologist will develop an active research program in the thirteen-county station area covering northwest Arkansas, conduct research individually and in collaboration with other ARAS archeologists, publish the results of scholarship in refereed venues, and obtain external funding to support research endeavors. The research area is rich with archeological resources ranging from bluff shelters to battlefields. Candidates should be willing to continue current research programs on diverse types of sites. The UAF research station archeologist teaches two courses (undergraduate and graduate) per academic year in the Department of Anthropology and contributes to other campus initiatives and programs, including the interdisciplinary Environmental Dynamics PhD program in The Graduate School and International Studies. The station archeologist also provides support to the Arkansas Archeological Society (https://arkarch.org), including participation in the annual Training Program in Archeology held during the month of June. In addition, the station archeologist will provide technical support and advice to federal, state, and local agencies, descendant communities, and members of the public as requested. Routine station operations include maintenance of site and project records and collections for the area, updating existing site file information and recording new sites in the state database, and supervising two station assistants. The person hired will have a research faculty title in the Department of Anthropology, University of Arkansas-Fayetteville and can chair and serve on graduate committees. Qualifications: A PhD in anthropology or archeology (in hand by July 1, 2019) and publications, fieldwork and research experience in North America east of the Rocky Mountains is required; experience in the Ozark Highlands region, public archeology, and educational outreach is preferred.
Salary: Annual starting salary is $47,500 with full benefits. Anticipated starting date is September 1, 2019.
