Position Summary:

Arkansas Tech University invites applications for a tenure track, Assistant Professor of Anthropology position beginning August 2025. Candidates should have expertise in archaeology focusing on the southeastern US, particularly in the areas of pre-colonial American archaeology and/or Early American archaeology, although other areas of topical and geographical expertise will be considered. Position is expected to manage the new Center for Heritage and Culture collections, enhance current offerings in Cultural Resource Management and Anthropology, including the Archaeology Field School, and participate in state and local archaeology events. It is expected the candidate will incorporate students into archeology and other work at the Center, advise and mentor students, as well as engage students in high impact learning practices, including being faculty advisor to the Archaeology Club. The new faculty member should also provide meaningful service to the department, college, university, and profession. The candidate will join the multi-disciplinary Department of Behavioral Sciences and will be one of four core faculty in the Anthropology & Geography degree program. The department currently has an active undergraduate population interested in archaeology with growth potential. The successful candidate will teach Introduction to Anthropology, courses in southeastern archaeology, and upper division/elective courses from the curriculum in the baccalaureate degree with the option to design more specialized courses. Course load will be 3/3 which includes a one-course released time each semester to manage the Center. A completed Ph.D. in Anthropology and college teaching experience are preferred. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Teach a variety of undergraduate courses including Introduction to Anthropology, Southeastern Archaeology, and upper division courses within the Anthropology and Geology programs.

Develop additional courses matching the candidate's expertise with program curriculum.

Effectively advise and mentor students

Engage students in high impact learning practices

Develop a sustainable scholarship program, including seeking external funds

Provide meaningful service to the department, college, university, and profession

Engage in assessment and continuous improvement of courses

Manage the Center for Heritage and Culture collections

Enhance current offerings in Cultural Resource Management and Anthropology

Manage Archaeology Field School

Participate in state and local archaeology events.

Perform other duties assigned by the Department Head.

Minimum Requirements:

Ph.D (or ABD with expected completion date by December, 2025).

Preferred Qualifications:

Expertise in archaeology with work focus on the southeastern US

Willingness to develop internships and/or field schools

Experience teaching undergraduates 

Evidence of peer-reviewed, original scholarship.

 

Work Location, Environment, and Physical Demands:

This position is located in offices and classrooms at ATU.

The position is assigned a desk and computer in location that may be in a different building than classroom locations, so the position requires the ability change locations and/or walk moderate distances during the day.

Required activities include: teaching and lecturing, sitting for extended periods, use of a keyboard and mouse, use of standard office equipment.
