Job Summary

Oversee the long-term preservation of artifact collections and documents at the Poverty Point World Heritage Site. Assist the Station Archaeologist with various obligations related to archaeology at Poverty Point WHS.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Process (clean, identify, label, and catalog) collected artifacts to the standards of the Louisiana Division of Archaeology and the Poverty Point Station Archaeology Program
  • Organize and store associated records
  • Maintain appropriate curatorial and office environment
  • Assist the Station Archaeologist with management obligations, including monitoring and recording maintenance activities, field research, and on-site outreach events
  • Pull/return artifacts for research, exhibit, or loan purposes
  • Assist researchers in identifying/locating appropriate samples for analysis
  • Reconcile conflicting information about artifact collections
  • Work with park maintenance staff, archaeological interns, casual wage workers, and volunteers
  • Other duties, as needed

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field is required
  • Knowledge of curatorial practices
  • Knowledge of Louisiana history and archaeology
  • Knowledge of scientific and archaeological methods and techniques
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the general public, K-12 students, university students, professional archaeologists, and park administrative and maintenance personnel
  • Ability to work independently
