The Mississippi Department of Archives and History is recruiting an MS Archaeology Survey Manager. The selected candidate will be responsible for directing cultural resource surveys undertaken by the Archaeology Section of the Historic Preservation Division. Additionally, they will need to complete reports for the surveys and create and review documentation associated with the agency's role in identifying, protecting, and distributing information about archaeological sites in Mississippi. This position is part of the Archaeology Section and will report to the Archaeology Programs Director.
Key responsibilities include directing all cultural resource surveys and supervising archaeology staff on state lands in accordance with MS Antiquities Law and NHPA. The candidate will write and complete all archaeological reports for the cultural resource surveys, enter information collected in the field into relevant databases, and review Phase I archaeology reports, scopes of work, research designs, and cultural resource assessments in accordance with state and federal regulations. They will coordinate with the Site File Manager for data entry and GIS needs, respond to public inquiries, complete site visits and eligibility assessments as appropriate, monitor the status of publicly-owned archaeology sites, and direct outreach and coordination as needed. Additional duties include maintaining an inventory of field equipment, including field vehicles, completing requisitions and assessments of needs, overseeing the Abandoned Cemeteries program, and performing other duties as needed.
